Tantra Yoga: The Ancient Practice of Love, Energy, and Awakening
For over 5,000 years, the three foundational elements of Tantra Yoga have been:
Breath (Pranayama): Conscious breathing techniques to regulate energy and deepen awareness.
Sound (Mantra & Vocalization): Using sacred sounds, chanting, or natural vocal expressions to release tension and amplify energy flow.
Movement (Asanas & Kundalini Flow): Gentle, flowing movements to awaken energy pathways and balance the chakras.
These principles work together to help you become more present, embodied, and connected to your energy—whether in meditation, movement, or intimate experiences.
What is Tantra Yoga?
Tantra Yoga is an ancient spiritual practice that integrates breath, movement, sound, and meditation to expand consciousness, cultivate self-awareness, and awaken life-force energy (prana). Unlike traditional yoga styles that focus primarily on physical postures (asanas), Tantra Yoga works with energy activation, Kundalini awakening, and deeper intimacy with self and others.
Often called the Yoga of Love and Sex, Tantra Yoga is not just about sexual practices—it’s about mastering your internal energy, connecting deeply with yourself, and experiencing higher states of bliss, presence, and awareness. When practiced fully, Tantra Yoga can be a path to emotional healing, nervous system regulation, and deep transformation in all areas of life.

The Three Core Pillars of Tantra Yoga
For over 5,000 years, the 3 Tenets of Tantra have been:
Breath (Pranayama): Conscious breathing techniques to regulate energy and deepen awareness.
Sound (Mantra & Vocalization): Using sacred sounds, chanting, or natural vocal expressions to release tension and amplify energy flow.
Movement (Asanas & Kundalini Flow): Gentle, flowing movements to awaken energy pathways and balance the chakras.
These principles work together to help you become more present, embodied, and connected to your energy—whether in meditation, movement, or intimate experiences.
The Healing Power of Tantra
I personally experienced deep healing and an energetic awakening (often called a Kundalini awakening) after a powerful experience with a lover. At the time, I didn’t fully understand what was happening—I only knew I felt more connected, alive, and awakened than ever before.
Later, when I became a trauma-informed master coach, I had a huge aha moment—modern trauma healing also relies on breath, sound, and movement as the three primary tools for nervous system regulation. It all clicked: Tantra is not just about sex—it’s about deep healing, energy expansion, and stepping into your fullest potential.
Tantra Yoga can help with:
Releasing emotional blockages and past trauma
Regulating the nervous system to reduce stress and anxiety
Enhancing intimacy and connection with yourself and others
Increasing life-force energy (prana) for vitality and creativity
Awakening higher consciousness through Kundalini activation
How to Practice Tantra Yoga: A Beginner’s Guide
If you’ve already explored pranayama (breathwork), you’re off to a great start. But Tantra Yoga goes deeper, incorporating movement, sound, and energy awareness. Here are five powerful ways to begin:
Conscious Breathwork (Pranayama with Energy Awareness)
Instead of just focusing on controlling the breath, begin to breathe energy through your entire body.
Inhale deeply, drawing breath from your root chakra (pelvic area) up your spine to your crown.
Exhale, sending the energy back down.
This awakens and circulates your Kundalini energy, increasing sensitivity and pleasure.
Activate Sound (Mantras & Vocalization)
Sound is one of the most powerful ways to release tension and awaken energy.
Try chanting mantras (such as "OM" or "Aham Prema" – "I am Divine Love").
During movement or intimacy, allow natural sounds to flow—moaning, sighing, or humming shifts you out of the thinking mind and into full-body presence.
Embodied Movement (Flowing Asanas & Mudras)
Traditional yoga postures can be modified for Tantra Yoga, incorporating undulating movements, hip circles, and spinal waves to awaken energy.
Instead of holding rigid poses, let your body flow intuitively.
Use mudras (hand gestures) to activate specific energy channels.
Self-Love & Sensory Activation
Tantra teaches presence in the senses, which enhances pleasure and embodiment.
Try slow, mindful self-touch, sensual movement, or even eye-gazing in the mirror to deepen intimacy with yourself.
Engaging fully in your senses—whether through touch, scent, taste, or sound—helps you cultivate Tantric awareness in everyday life.
Drop the Goal—Embrace the Experience
One of the biggest shifts in Tantra is letting go of the need to "achieve" anything (whether in yoga or intimacy).
Instead of focusing on a specific outcome, allow yourself to experience each moment fully.
Tantra is about elongating states of pleasure, connection, and presence rather than chasing an endpoint.
The Connection Between Tantra Yoga and Kundalini Awakening
One of the ultimate experiences in Tantra Yoga is the awakening of Kundalini energy, the dormant energy at the base of the spine. When activated, this energy moves through the chakra system, unlocking higher states of awareness, deep pleasure, and even enlightenment.
This process isn’t something to force—it happens naturally as you deepen your practice. Tantra Yoga prepares the body, mind, and spirit to hold this level of energy, allowing for safe and profound expansion. I share more about Kundalini here.
